The FitzGerald Building Revitalization at the University of Toronto has won a 2025 Heritage Toronto Award for Adaptive Reuse in the Built Heritage category.
Built in 1927 on U of T's St. George Campus, the historic Georgian Revival-style building is designated under the Heritage Act. The project included a complete renovation of the outdated laboratory/research facility into an inviting, high-performance office environment to be used primarily for the Office of the President and the University’s Central Administration. The revitalized LEED Silver-targeted building is an exemplary example of adaptive reuse, with new mechanical and electrical systems as well as new control technologies that emphasize sustainability and energy management advancements.
Working together with Design Architect OMA, RDHA was the Architect of Record. The project team included ERA Architects (Heritage Architect), Smith + Andersen (Mechanical, Electrical, Lighting), Entuitive (Structural, Envelope), Valdor Engineering (Civil), NAK (Landscape Architect), and Buttcon Limited (Contractor).
The winners of the 50th annual Heritage Toronto Awards were announced on October 20, 2025, at The Carlu in downtown Toronto. Six winners were named from 60 nominees in three categories: Book, Public History, and Built Heritage. Five of the categories were independently judged by a jury of experts, with the sixth category, the People’s Choice Award, chosen by Heritage Toronto donors and Awards ticket holders.
