Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineering School (RCEME)

Borden, Ontario

Serving as the central training facility for all Canadian Armed Forces mechanical and electrical engineers, this 140,000-square-foot building includes traditional classrooms alongside highly specialized workshops where students learn to maintain and repair a wide variety of equipment and vehicle types.

Materially, the building is conceived as a grouping of five program volumes offset from one another to create interstitial circulation zones and lobbies. Each box is clad with white fibre cement panels, while the entire complex is wrapped in an outer layer of anodized aluminum standing seam panels, notched and held back at various points to 'reveal' the panelized volumes beneath.
