Consolidated Operations Centre

Newmarket, Ontario

2006 - 2011

Setting a new design standard for this under-appreciated typology, this project acts as civic landmark celebrating those who maintain the community's physical infrastructure. The 65,000 square foot program consolidates three municipal departments and includes offices, meeting and training spaces, and facilities for the storage, repair and washing of vehicles and equipment. The building is conceived around a linear sequence great rooms, and adopts a rigorously pragmatic vocabulary using off-the-shelf components. Full-height glazed bifold doors help to unify the elevations in a seamless composition of glass and metal. A suspended welded wire mesh ceiling forms a scrim over mechanical and electrical components and prevents birds from nesting in the building.
