project description:

Rounthwaite Dick and Hadley were commissioned to renovate the swimming pool and associated facilities of Hart House at the University of Toronto in December, 1991. The completion date was required to be before the start of the new academic year in September, 1992. The short time period of under nine months was even more challenging considering that the work was to be carried out on an historic building built in 1919. The work also had to be organized to permit continued use of the remaining facilities. A study of the scope of work and its impact on the ongoing use of the facilities and related budget costs was necessary. The work included total replacement of the pool mechanical systems the existing gutter system was converted to a skimmer system, and a new chlorine feed and automatic chemical control systems were installed. Other mechanical work included a new HVAC system. New lockers for 1150 males and 1150 females were provided, together with showers and washrooms, a new security system for the safety of women using the facility and a new exercise equipment room. Finishes throughout the pool area were restored or replaced. Modern materials simulating historic finishes were used wherever possible to reduce maintenance costs. Several user groups were involved in the project and numerous meetings had to be held to ensure that the concerns of all parties were addressed. This extensive consultative process included meetings with the Historical Board, the Transition Committee, the Architectural Advisory Group, the Security Committee, and a general members meeting of over 200 participants. Our thoughtful, responsible, and positive approach at this vital stage of the process helped get the disparate interest groups on side for a common vision. The project was completed on time, within budget, and received much praise for its sensitive restoration of the historical Pool Hall and for the attractive design of the new related facilities.
