project description:

Hamilton, Ontario (with Lintack Architects) Due for completion in 2012, this new 2,600 SM aquatic and multipurpose complex will be located in Stoney Creek, a suburb of Hamilton which has until now been without a central recreation facility. The program includes a three-tank natatorium with changerooms, seniors and youth centres, administrative spaces, and a group exercise classroom. Provisions have also been made for a future multi-use gym addition. The project is conceived around three columnar ‘great rooms’ of varying height: the lobby faces west to the parking and arrival plaza, the natatorium faces north to the street, and the seniors centre and exercise space face south to a community park. The design takes a restrained, minimalist approach to form, image and detailing. Clad in capless curtain wall and narrow courses of grey Indiana limestone masonry, the building will subtly engage with both the nearby Battlefield Monument and the historic fabric of Stoney Creek's Old Town.
